Course Introduction

As a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (also called a Medical Office Secretary or Medical Office Assistant), you’ll keep healthcare offices running efficiently and effectively. This is a highly-rewarding profession - and not only monetarily. Medical assistants are often the first to greet and help patients, and can help set the stage for a patient’s experience.

The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is a nationally recognized certification for Medical Administrative Assistants. It demonstrates your ability to perform routine administrative tasks in a physicians’ office or clinic to keep it running efficiently. Medical Administrative Assistants are also known as Medical Office Secretaries and Medical Office Assistants.

This program provides students with an opportunity to develop comprehensive entry-level skills in the various aspects associated with working in a medical office or a hospital. A combination of theory and practice in the laboratory techniques, patient interaction and office functions such as billing and computer operations are covered and provide for a well-round, through training experience. In addition, students will be assigned 120 hours of externship in an actual medical office or clinic where they can practice skills learned and hone new skills. This program is equipped with phlebotomy practice equipment, EKG machines, examination tables, personal computers, skeletons, charts, mannequins, lab equipment and supplies.

In addition, our program is approved by National Health Career Association (NHA), and our curriculum covers all the materials requested for NHA clinical medical assistant certification exam. Upon successfully completing our training program and passing NHA Medical Administrative Assistant certification exam, students will be a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA). The certification is recognized in New Jersey as well as national-wide. The externship part of this program gives students the opportunity to develop both cognitive and technical skills in the actual medial care setting. This environment exposes the students to the working area in which they must respond to varied situations that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. After completing and passing all the modules, a student will be assigned to a Physician Office or Clinic for 120 hour intensive training where a student will be allowed to experience the real world of patient contact and skills application.

To become a CMAA, you're required to at least hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) also requires you to have completed a medical assistant training program. If you wait more than five years to take the exam after completing a training program, you must have at least one year of professional experience working in a medical setting.
